simple photo matting

Do you want to start scrapbooking, but don't have a clue how?

Give it a try! It's not as hard as you think....When you see all those fabulous pages that others have made already, it's hard to know where to start. It's a good idea to start simply with a few supplies that aren't expensive. Beginning scrapbooking is fun and easy. This guide should give you some easy ideas to start and will cover the basics. There are many great instruction books out there for you to get great ideas for scrapbooking layouts and designs.

Where do I start?

First, gather up all those family pictures sitting around all over the house. Group some photos together that have the same theme (vacation, wedding, baby, birthday party, etc.). You can make a scrapbook with a particular theme or person in mind. Maybe you want a scrapbook full of every vacation your family took, all of sports that your kids played, and so on. Now that you have an idea in mind, what does a person even need to start scrap booking beside all those pictures?

Helpful supplies to have:

One thing you'll definitely need is a scrapbook. There are so many available these days, but if you can't find one with an already decorated outside that you adore, try just getting a plain one. Then you will be able to "play" with the outside and make it to suit the personality or subject that you put in your scrapbook. There are all sorts of sizes available, the most common are probably 12" x 12", but you can also get smaller ones, 8" x 8", and even smaller.

After you decide on a scrapbook, look for several different colors of card stock paper and patterned paper that will look great with the colors that are in your photos. Make sure the paper is acid-free (it will say so on the package if it is). You will also need acid-free glue, scissors, some embellishments such as die cuts and stickers, ribbons, brads, anything that you think will look great on your first page.

Once you have these supplies, it's time to start "playing"! Don't panic on me now! Do just that, play around till you get the look you want. Pick out some photos for your page (between 1 and 4 to start) and lay them out on whatever background paper you chose, and just see how they look. Just don't glue anything down yet! You can even lay out some of your embellishments and see how they look.  After you are sure about the photos you want on the page, you may want to mat them.

Mat my photos? What's that?

Ok, I had the same question when I started, but no one gave any particular answers as to what that meant! I needed to know, so I did a little research, and all it means is to make a background for your photo. Why would a photo need a background? Well, they don't necessarily need one, but sometimes it makes them stand out more, and gives the page a little more pizazz.

If you are faint of heart, you might not want to do this next step, but it's up to you. You can crop your photo, that is, cut away any parts not needed. Make sure you get nice clean edges. You don't have to stick with the traditional square or rectangle photo shape, but it might be good to start that way. A paper cutter is great for this!

Ok, on to matting your photo. Pick one or more pieces of paper that have colors that compliment your photo. You can layer different papers for a great effect. Cut the paper so that the one that's in the very back is the biggest. It should have a nice edge that sticks out beyond the photo. If you choose to, cut another paper that goes right behind your photo.  Another idea is to cut a shape out of paper, like a heart or oval, and frame your picture with the shape. This nice layering effect will really make your pages pop! When you get the look you want, glue the mats together if you have more than one, otherwise, choose how you will attach your photo. You can just glue it to the mat with acid-free glue, you can use foam dots (raises the picture up for a nice effect), or use photo corners and place each corner of the photo in the holders. Now you can place your photo and mat on your scrapbook page!

adding journalling or pre-made sayings

What's next?

After matting and placing your photos on your scrapbook page, you can add some writing or "journalling" to your pages. Make sure you use an acid-free pen or marker. The writing can be done right on your page, or on another piece of paper that you glue to the page. If you hand write a title at the top of your page (ie. Christmas, 1965), make sure you do it with a nice wide-tip marker so that it will show up really well. I don't know what to write...If you're like me, some times I need an idea or two to get started.

 Maybe give these a try:

Name the event and year it's taking place: Easter 1988, Christmas 1990, New Baby 2001, and so on.

Write what emotions you were feeling at the time: what you heard, saw, felt, smelled, when it happened.

Something easy : if you just can't find the right words for your page, check out all the great quotes and poems that you can place on your page. Even rub-on words are great!

Almost done!

Now that you've put the photos and words on the page, play around with embellishing the page to make it delightful to look at! If you still need ideas for scrap booking layouts, there are great instructional and idea books to give you fantastic ideas. While this page gives you an idea of how to get started, there are many books with in depth and detailed layouts that will amaze you.Give it a try! Just starting by deciding on what photos to use, and then laying them out on paper will start that creative process in your mind. Think of all the love and memories your family and friends will feel when they look at the history you helped preserve!
