When I teach a class, I bring a few of my cards with their corresponding templates. Students use my templates to make their first card. Once they get that under their belt, they surprise themselves by abandoning the template technique. Working with one of my cards as a model, they draw and cut their next cards freehand. Soon after that, they decide to enhance or change my designs in some way. By the end of the day, many are designing their own cards!

I love this process and have designed the book, Card Art, with this in mind. There are twelve cards with full-size templates. The remaining cards can be drawn and cut freehand using my cards as models, or can be copied for templates. As a quilter, I have a large stash of fabric sitting idly around my workroom, and some years back I hit upon the idea of pasting fabric to paper, a hybrid I call "papric." This concoction can be cut up and used exactly like paper. Furthermore, by turning fabric into paper, I have on hand colors and designs I would never find in paper alone. Most of the cards in this book use papric because its texture and look appeal to me. If you're not a "fabric" person and don't want to become one, almost all the card designs in the book can be made using paper instead of papric.
